Chapter 9 – Rick

My eyes had adjusted to the darkness of the bedroom. I hadn’t needed lights during our lovemaking. I could smell, feel, taste, sense every part of her, every movement of her. I had never felt so a part of another person, so connected to a woman that I was sleeping with like I had been with her. I felt as though Shae knew my every move and knew how to move her body to meet it with perfection.

For all the partners I’d had in my time, all over the country, I had never had an experience like what I’d had with Shae.

I slid my arm under her shoulders and curled her in, hugging her to me after she returned from the bathroom. I had lain down on the bed, enjoying the smell of her pillow, the scent of her shampoo, and her very essence when she came back and lay next to me. I smelled the scent of our lovemaking on her hair, and I kissed her, feeling the connection grow stronger. I wanted to hold her like that in my arms forever.

This is what finding your mate feels like, I realized. That’s what I’ve done. I’ve found my mate.

The idea baffled me. I’d been convinced that wasn’t something I was going to experience; it was something that I wasn’t even sure I wanted to experience. But now that Shae was in my arms, I knew it with absolute certainty, and I wanted nothing else in the world than to be with her.

I squeezed her again, feeling her arm tighten around my chest as she returned the gesture.

“You’re going to make me pop if you keep squeezing me,” she giggled.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I just can’t remember the last time I felt this good.”

“Sex has that effect,” she said, lifting her head. I could see that she was joking, trying to make light of what I said, trying to dodge what I was actually saying. A defense mechanism to keep me at a distance.

“No, you have that effect,” I corrected her. “Trust me when I say that that was all you.”

She purred. I could feel the rumble in her all the way down my side. It was such a soothing experience. I could have fallen asleep right then and there, died even, and been the happiest man there was.

“Rick?” Shae asked after a few minutes.

“Mm-hm?”

“You know yesterday when I saw you behind my work? What happened there? Why were you there?”

I inhaled. I was going to have to tell her about what I did, more about the club.

“Well,” I started, trying to figure out how I wanted to approach this. “At dinner, you asked me about the club, right?”

She nodded, her hair tickling my chest.

“And you wanted to know what side of the law I was on?”

Shae paused before slowly nodding. I could tell she already didn’t like where this was going.

“My club and I are … justice-seekers. We generally are hired by people to right some wrong that’s been done.
